 As such, the potential out of pocket expenses involving a hospitalization has become an important consideration when employers and consumers are selecting health plan coverage, and are an important item to properly budget for when services are needed.. 

The Calculator is a very useful tool to estimate and budget for out of pocket costs with hospitalizations, and to compare the relative estimated differences in out of pocket expenses between different health plans and scenarios. 

The purpose of the Calculator is not to provide you an exact calculation of what your personal out of pocket costs will be in a specific situation, and the Calculator can not be relied upon for that purpose. The Calculator uses a variety of assumptions and estimates in its calculations that can not accurately reflect your exact situation. 

What the Calculator can do is provide you a rough estimate that you can use for budgeting purposes for a contemplated hospitalization, as well as provide you a relatively “apples to apples” means of comparing different health plan benefit packages for their differences in out of pocket expenses in given scenarios. 

When you use the Calculator you select between different HMO, PPO and Consumer Driven plan models to compare. Each model uses assumed deductible, copayment, coinsurance, benefit maximums and other factors to determine your estimated out of pocket costs for a given hospitalization with that type of benfit plan. 

You can customize these assumptions if you wish, by clicking the Calculator's Copay/Coinsurance or Deductible/ Maximums tabs, and enter the specific benefit information from a plan you're evaluating. To do this, you'll need to have the summary benefit information handy for the plan you're evaluating. There is a 15 minute inactivity time limit from when you start the calculator until the information is reset, so if you plan on customizing, you might want to first review and organize the information you intend to enter.
